I used his design last year and it worked great! It's essentially a matrix mounted on mesh. Couldn't use the holes in the mesh for sloped eaves so the pixels are just cable tied onto the front of the mesh.

i have some 12mm square aviary wire i was going to attempt to use... if it doesnt, where do you get the mesh?

The mesh was from Bunnings. I used the 50mm mesh but I think he might have used the 25mm. The pixels don't slot into the mesh; it's just used as a support frame and I cable tied the pixels onto it.
