Chris and David organised for some RGB modules to be sent to me as samples from Ray Wu.
I little review for you all.

40mm dome covered modules

Two types:
3 x 5050 leds and 3 x R, 3 x G, 3 x B strawhat leds

Both type are very bright.
Both types are very well waterproofed the board and leds are potted in epoxy.
The 5050's produced the best colour variations during fades etc as expected.
You can see the individual led colours on the 3 x R, 3 x G, 3 x B strawhat leds.

Straight modules

Two types:
3 x 5050 leds and 3 x R, 3 x G, 3 x B strawhat leds

Again both are very bright.
Again both types are very well waterproofed the board and leds are potted in epoxy.
And again the 5050's produced the best colour variations during fades etc as expected.
However when placing them under some coroflute they were pretty much the same.

30mm 5050 dome pixel

I have also got some small 30mm dome type pixels which have a single 5050 led inside.
They use a 705 based IC, which has a protocol very similar (if not the same) to the 6803.
Not extremely bright as there is only one 5050.
They are very well water proofed again with the circuit board being potted in epoxy.

Thanks for posting this information! Can I request the following information on the followup?

* Voltage
* Driver chip (for the others)
* The edge to edge distance between the nodes
* The overall height
* Model/Mfg (link?)
* Recommend/Would not buy

Thanks!

Quick video and more info.

Voltage
40mm domes - 12v
Straight Modules - 12v
30mm domes - 5v

Driver chip
40mm domes - 6803
Straight Modules - 6803
30mm domes - 705

The edge to edge distance between the nodes
Not sure i only got one of each to test.
I would guess around 8-10cm
The 30mm domes are longer around 15-18cm

The overall height
Update when I get home.

Model/Mfg (link?)
See above for Rays site

Recommend/Would not buy
Yes all of them were well made, personally I would buy the 5050 type for the colour mixing.

Video
From left to right: 3RGB 40mm dome - 5050 40mm dome - 5050 straight module - 3RGB straight module.
Video of these modules do not really do them justice so close.

FYI - it appears that the link provided above:

waterproof led pixel module,3pcs SMD RGB 5050,1pcs LPD6803,32 gray level,DC12V,0.72W

to the 30mm domes are NOT for the samples that Tabor tested. The voltage and the controller chip types don't match up.

Hey D

The samples I got were five volts with only one 5050 output led.

These are the same except they are 12v and I would expect them to be 3 x 5050 leds.

As for the protocol.
I think the 6803 and the 705 chips are almost identical, they will give the same greyscale levels.

As a side note, the 12v are the ones we were expecting to test.

I think the 12v would be a better option as well the single 5050 in that cover was not the brightest.
