Fantastic encounter. I'm sure they are gentle giants but could do a lot of damage accidentally. We had a similar encounter whilst fishing out at Little Barrier ( Auckland) with a whale swimming around us and I can tell you, when your fishing from a Jetski, the craft I was sitting on seemed suddenly very small. We eventually left and went fish a few hundred meters away but the whale followed us and checked us out a bit more.
Your video shows one of the true joys of fishing...encounters with whales, dolphins, gannets etc really makes your day. Nice video.
 
Its must of been a hard call.. Do I grab my life jacket or my camera? Always great to see them close up., Ive had a view come and eyeball me and even a a minki came right up to the pod on the boat 1 time. Love the vid, thanks for sharing.
