Strips - Always 3 LED's per pixel?

I may be a bad searcher because I can't seem to find this answer even though I would guess its probably been answered many times.


Assuming I don't want to have a strip custom made, are digital strips always 3 LED's per IC/pixel?


Reading the descriptions on Ray Wu's site is difficult as they flip back and forth between 'per strip' info and 'per meter' info and the pictures aren't always of the right item either.

No they also come in 2 LED and 1 LED per pixel. The reason you see the 3 LED per section is because its a 12vdc model, the 2 a 1 LEDs per pixel are usually 5vdc

You'll probably get a more technical reply from someone more qualified to give it, but in layman's terms, the individual LEDs themselves don't require a full 12V, they may only require 3.5V. So having 3 for each pixel totals 10.5V, and once you add the current required for the chip, it's not difficult to come down from 12v to there.

If you try and supply 12V to a pixel that only has one LED that requires 3.5V, you're needing to get that 12V down a lot more, hence why these will usually be 5V strips.

As I know, the LPD8806 strip is 2-LEDs cuttable, and they work on DC5V, while the WS2801 strip which input voltage is aslo DC5V, can be cut every one LED. And the 3-LEDs cuttable digital strips includes the LPD6803 strip, DMX512 strip, etc.

The TM1809 based strips are one Pixel per Pixel. The TM1809 has 3 RGB outputs per chip. Ray Wu sells it as 12volts, not 5.


When you look at these flexible strips, you could easily think that the 3 5050 LEDs work together as a single pixel, but they don't. The ones I've seen are 30 pixels per meter, so they have 10 TM1809 IC chips and 30 LEDs. It is "cuttable" on the very visible line after every third 5050 LEDs, but that is because of the TM1809 chip circuitry, not the LEDs.

the ink1003 looks like a wes2811 (the cheapest per meter flex strip) , but it does individual pixel lights. There was a problem with the e682 running the ink1003 since they apparently run at 800khz speed. most of the lights on here run at 400khz. The falcon controllers work on both since dave pitts adjusted his controllers to a sweet spot between the two frequencies. jim st john has come out with a patch for the e682 that makes them work. i have not heard if anyone has tested the p12r or p12s on the ink1003. All other lights on here should work across all controllers.
