In the effects tab there is a check box for Enable when idle - when this is checked you lose the ability to control from xLights.

My idea was to have the pixels go to an default effect overnight .... and restart the xLights sequence started ...

I've also found that the Enable When Idle doesn't seem to work, or at least it doesn't do what I think it should.

Maybe someone else knows how to have the chosen effect only run when not receiving data.

Review of the WLED Library,

After you get the Correct Bin file an then the uploading software working (esptool.py)
First issue, I have found with that WLED is that it use's WAP instead of WAP2, so ipad a android dont want to connect to its wifi. but my laptop did tho.
Thats when i found the second issue, the password on there wiki is'nt correct, instead its "wled1234"
I then entered in my wifi info, (note only 2.4Ghz works, Not 5Ghz)

After finely finding the E1.31 settings, very hard to find in that big list of all sorts of sync settings (mqtt, alexia, blynk, hue sync, etc)

I had a lovely rainbow effect happening on the pixels..
Then i turned on e1.31 data (even if the data is'nt for the pixels), an instantly it shut off the rainbow effect an started doing its e1.31 stuff (or blank)
After turning off E1.31 it took like 2 seconds an switched straight back into the rainbow setting.

In the End, After you get it installed an work out the settings, you'll love it.
Im now going to be switching to it, for the show this year.

I might even start selling the 'pixel-wifi' again, But with that firmware on it.

WLED seems robust - still having ALL KINDS of problems getting at its ipconfig pages - must have flashed 4 times trying to work on it with my phone - I didn't think of trying it with my laptop - there was someone online that went through flashing and the configuring with lights - very helpful

Now If I could just get fpp to work with it ...

I am going to reflash the existing controllers with WLED - Once it is setup it is quite flexible - I have a few pixels stuck in my Santa hat cycling between quite a few presets - just too easy ... Will flash one controller and test - then the other - stay tuned - film at eleven ...

using the tutorial I found here

I am assuming that WLED will let E1.31 override any running effect - haven't had a chance to test yet .... If there is anything I need to do first it would be helpful to know in advance
