Today's project was to put the new topper on the mega tree pole so that I could see where the star will sit on it (to give enough clearance between the pole and star cables while the topper is raised/lowered). Still to be done is to add supports for the star to be fixed back on to (today the star was just resting against the main mega tree pole).

The topper has been sized to fit either 16 strings (inner circle) or 24 strings (outer circle) for a 180 degree pixel tree + a bit more. For this year I'm not sure whether my old single colour LED dumb strings (from 2007-2009) will see out one more season or if I will swap them to pixels to match the star upgrade. If it happens this year then it'll just be a 16 string tree (for now?).

So who else made progress this weekend?

Swapped the HE123Mk2 that was in this case with the HE123D prototype that was on my development board because in running more receivers this year.

Fortunately only one more gland had to be added, as 4x xConnect pigtails were removed from the original design.

This weekend my mega tree pole got an upgrade with a winch to help lift the heavier star + topper. It hasn't quite worked as planned due to the placement of the star causing the topper to lean forward and get jammed on the pole when trying to lower it. Works fine when raising while the winch cable is tensioned, though. So some modification may be in order, otherwise the star won't come back down again 🤨.

So how about you, did you make progress this weekend? 😀

I had the same issue with mine. The solution was to attach a steel cable to the rear of the topper, which can be pulled as the topper is lowered to keep it level.
I also use it to stop the front sagging when in operation.

Perhaps in the next few days or at the weekend I'll finally be ready to start putting out lights for this year. How is everyone's setup going?

For the past several evenings I have been removing meters upon meters of old 'Christmas light extension cables' (figure 8 cable with 2.1mm round barrel connectors) that were buried under probably up to 15 years of ground-cover o_O, These old cables have been used for years to power/control single-colour dumb led strings and were left in place between seasons to simplify display setup. With intended changes to this year's show most of these old cables will not be required any longer (at least I hope 🤣).
