Paralysis of Analysis – Pixel types – My first display journey

I think I determined how the vendors think about the wire gauge issue. They say the wire is 18 gauge and in their mind it is because if you add up the cross sectional area for the individual wires it is about the same as the cross sectional area of 18 AWG. So, the combined wire gauge of the individual wires that comprise the pixel "cable" is 18 AWG but the individual wires are not.

How long have you had them? They been reliable so far?

@merryoncherry sent a sample pack so I have been having a ton of fun playing with them :)

My current plan is to buy/make some simple props to put these into place for this season (already have the dumb lights up), and after staring at the different pixels through December, will make a large order from China in January/Feb/March (any time of year known to be less busy than others? I imagine Oct. Nov. Dec. has got to be a zoo for those guys in China).

I'm also toying with trying a bunch of seeds too. Some say they work okay, others say they look like a pain to work with... But that's where my brain is pondering so far...

Just think with seeds... If you maxed out a Kulp 32, each channel running 780 seeds, 280 15mm spaced seeds per mega-tree strand, up down and back up again equaling 780 per channel, you'd have a 24,960 seed-pixel mega tree 😈

I run all seeds and evos from raywu and had good luck with them so far.
Use seeds for stuff like window outlines, mega tree, arches and some props with 3d printed adaptors for 12mm holes
Moved mostly to evos for coro props this year as seed adaptors are annoying to install. Like them so far but kind wish the resin was white not clear to diffuse them a bit more.
Seeds bought in rolls of 1000 pixels. Evos bought in strings of 50 pre terminated.
Im sure bullets have there place but i find them heavy and expensive for my use case.

Just curious, have you also tried the dome/gumdrops from Ray @macmanluke? They have that diffused look.

Does Ray actually manufacture all of that peripheral stuff do you think? Obviously he manufactures the bullets, but he has a massive amount of cool products on his Alibaba page (the main page I have been surfing). I wonder if his shop builds all of that, or if he resells some of it.

For my spring order for '26, I want to order a bunch of seeds, likely dome/gumdrops, and also C9's and under-eaves lights as well.

I'm tentatively planning on going all-in on the redundant data line. Maybe unnecessary, but if I can pay a few more cents per light for a bit more insurance, I think I'll take it.

Thanks for the reliability input. Very interesting.

Not yet but might give them a go next year

SHENZHEN RITA LIGHTING LTD seems to be the company that makes all the raywu stuff but im sure some of it is just sourced from other manufacturers

K nice. Yep that's the store I've been searching through. Goodnight so so so many options. Hard to tell even what the differences between the various seemingly similar products are too.

Okay interesting. Adds to the complication when we ask for custom specifics or questions about a specific type of light I suppose. Everything in the video you posted above of them manufacturing pixels was all the bullet style.

Like you guys were saying earlier in this thread, "they just work" more often than not though. Just order stuff and enjoy what comes.

But the nerd in me keeps geeking out, and before I make a big order I'll still ask here even if the answer still ends up being "it's fine go for it."

The large order I'd like to make in Jan/Feb tentatively will include a lot of seeds.

Any opinions between the WS2815 and the WS2818 based options?
Alibaba link-ity link for the 2815's
Alibaba link-ity link for the 2818's

I've heard you say the black wire is much longer lasting.

But the 2815 based seeds are more expensive, even though I'm getting the impression that the 2818's are possibly a newer chip?

And... we're back to the specs being BS. The 2815 may or may not be correct, but as the 2818 is a discrete chip, it isn't used in seed pixels. Your one listing says "Emitted Color: WS2818/WS2815 RGB IC Dual Signal" ... a new color...

Be careful about products produced straight after the Chinese New Year holiday season. Quality is often lower due to new employees with less experience. Time your purchases to avoid that.

Oh funny @merryoncherry! I did understand in my reading it was a discrete chip, but didn't know what the ramifications , I wonder why they are $100 less for 3,000 of the supposed 2818's and $100 more for 3,000 of the 2815's?

Well, I'll just ask when I email him the order if one is known to be more reliable than another, and just go with that I guess.

@Skymaster I've looked at other sellers, but Rita sure does have an incredible selection of fun lighting toys... I know other sellers have been recommended by some. But for variety of lighting options, Rita sure has alot of fun options.

Lol okay I'd never have known that @darylc , thank you... So that's Feb. 17th for us... So make a large order May/June/July??
