Snow in Australia

Well as we don't have snow in Aus, I wanted to make an area on my front lawn using a couple of rolls of cotton wool and pushing pixel nodes through it (Matrix style) and then haveing it twinkle with white. I will put my reindeer and sleigh on it along with some spiral trees (making a little snow scene).

I found this and it looks pretty cheap.

My question is has anyone done this? And what problems they encountered?

I think the cotton wool could get dirty pretty quick (that’s where the lights might help), and was also thinking it could be a fire danger.

But the white floor and twinkling lights should look pretty cool, and I can also incorporate the snow into the show.

Anyway just floating the idea, hopefully someone has seen it work or have other ways to achieve this look.

We did something similar last year, but used stuffing out of old pillows to put around the edges of our "Snow Room". Issues with it were wind, rain and dirt as you mentioned.
The rain wasn't too bad, stuffing stayed wet for a bit longer than everything else, the wind was the biggest issue. Blowing the stuff away every other day. Dirt will ALWAYS be a problem with white, but depends I guess if people are going to be walking on it, if it's on a dirt base, if you get rain etc...

I do think the lights twinkling through it would be a great effect though!

I've seen snow displays using speaker acoustic wadding. It's white and doesn't matter if it gets wet.

I priced up the insta snow last year. I did all the math to get the depth of effect I wanted and off of memory it worked out to be about 5 grand worth of the polymer and about 3000 litres of water to make it. I gave up on that ideal pretty quickly but may look again at a much smaller scale.

I did indeed do snow on most of the front yard this year. We went with a white garden underlay matting from the landscape supplies. it was layed over a bark garden and grassed area under our Sleighand Yes it got dirty from me walking all the time to fill the snow machine. It easily allowed all the leaves,bark and grass clippings to be blow off it with a leaf blower.
The grass didn't die under it, in fact it took my 5 sessions with the mower to cut the grass after a month.
We tried wadding from spotlight and everything stuck to it and we had to throw it away after the season.
