This is going to be an issue with any two programs that are sending E1.31 to the same universes with any kind of "keep alive" functionality. Basically one program is sending the >0 channel values, while the other program is sending all 0 data.
The controller is correctly responding to both...
I've done simple experiments with a kinect when it first came out a couple years ago, controlling LED lights on an AC controller in response to kinect data and a person's movements:
Next kinect and dmx demo
The other option if you have lit batons would be to use OpenCV to do the detection...
other stores on that site carry many of the same things - but you have to buy huge minimums. That is what made Ray's store unique. Hope this gets resolved favorably. Sorry your thread got hijacked Andrew :P

I would love to hear your thoughts on how to take advantage of these displays and what you want from software. My project has currently been very congruous with your "death of the grid" article.
how long will your display be up? Any chance you have a Mac in the mix of gear available - or can...
and if you want to go the pricey harware route:

Sounds like the OP is using a PC - but if you are running a Mac/Linux platform that can run OLA - it supports merging
It might even be able to act as a "merger" for incoming E1.31 from Madrix and LSP, and then output the merged data, but not so sure about that...
I came to the xmas lights scene too late to try and pull off a "show" in the standard sense, so I did two "smaller" projects.
This one was conceived and executed in under a month - just lit them up today. Full thread with lots of build photos here...
We just got a wine opener from costco that came in a real beefy package - and I needed something to prevent my kids from stepping on my ecg - so a couple minutes later (not weatherproof)

I've thought about the pointing idea - not trivial.
To do it right - you'd need to extract the arm and finger, and turn that into a vector. Then you'd need to represent the 3D space of the sensor in a larger 3D model of your house layout, and determine lights that lay on or near the vector of...
I haven't written anything on this forum about my project that involves a different approach to sequencing, best thread on it would be here:

but since this crowd seems into "new and interesting" figured I'd show my quick proof of concept of...
What, you mean I shouldn't expect this to be able to handle 1MB packets at 500khz?? Really?
Seriously - you should be very proud of the this sweet gizmo. I'm quite pleased with it.
It would be interesting to see how hyperdmx compare's to RJ's new PixelNet protocol - I bet there are some...
OK - on doing some more testing.
The DR4 is hitting overuns with a full 512 at a refresh rate as low as 60hz
However with fewer channels, this can be driven much higher. With only a few channels, I've gone as high as 500hz and still not had overruns.
My sweetspot seems to be 128 channels at...
