This is what I made 2 years ago:
Double action 2801 board 3cm*3cm :
1st option : RGB pixel 3x5050 display (soldered on top side/not shown here)
2nd option: RGB output to drive 3 outputs/ DC third party RGB lights.
So easy to do it for WS2811 as well...

what sort of costs was it to make the board?

So, going back 2 years ago and looking the costs...
Humm it was around $1 per module for a batch of 2000 units built.
Wired in factory, but not controlled.... I had around 10 % non working on delivery and after fixing the PB on these 10%, finally I got around 3% to trash.... Not too bad, but CHINESE quality control at PCB factory is another story... (components messing in some, bad soldering in others, etc...).
But at end very happy as in these times a 3x5050 RGB WS2801 modules costed around $4 minimum on chinese sites.
Today is not interesting to devellop led display modules regarding the pricing at Ray's. But for the small decoders : yes, there is a niche for that, for those who don't want to have a big centralized box with 12 /8 outputs but more very small devices for easy distribution installation on field using the standard DMX: protocol still alive and costs are low too.
You can integrate this small circuit 5x5 cm easily in any display enclosure.

For example for $15 with a size 5cmx5cm, it's possible to get :
DMX 512 to led strip driving WS2812, WS2811, TM1803, TM1804, TM1809, TM1812,UCS1903, UCS1909, UCS1912, UCS2903 for high speed mode
3 channels output and max.8A for channels. The maximum on the controller current - 24 amps /12v
The controller can work with standard RGB led as well as SPI decoder 170 pixels.
The cherry on cake: embedded off-line library around 20 efffects to run RGB or SPI as standalone device.
This is interesting too to have as per cheap cost, multi-functions, and very small size with dipswitch for adress selection and access to library...
I'll update soon about this, in this section....
Henri.

You should open another thread for this in the development thread Henri as there could be interest shown.

The 30 channel variety is pretty much laid out and is just getting tidied up ready to get proto boards made. The pcb is pretty much 4 inches square. I decided to go with a 15 channel reduced channel count version which will be somewhere in the region of 4 inches by 2.5 inches.
Below is a rough 3D render of the 30 channel board.

No idea on pricing yet.

This is great...
My thoughts are 2013 will be a great year for the SPI boards....
Specially for the WS2811 and hybrid WS2812...

Below is a 3D render of the 15 channel board. To put it into perspective this board is almost the same size as an iphone and will do 15 channels at a total of 30 amps.

All of the Chinese suppliers are on Chinese New Year holidays at the moment so things are on hold until I can get pcbs and components. I missed by a few days on getting the boards out to me before things shut down.
