i have started creating some seed pixel poles utilizing the SFL 4 inch tree topper as bottoms and top bases

i have designed them in xlights, and whilst i wait for the toppers to print so i can start prototyping,

does anyone know some good effects to use on a 360 degree pole ?

i want to test effects in xlights

Is it a tree model? First thought is the same thing you;'d do with a 360 degree tree or a matrix. Have been doing this with the tree out front that has a net wrapped around, same shape.

should i look at some of the more exotic things they do with mega trees for these poles ? there only 4 inches round , 60 pixel high (5cm spacing) 3m tall

I would say they work like mini trees, column matrix, pixel pole, mega tree... all of those things flatten out to a matrix that is tall and skinny, so the same effects are suitable.

OK Cool, so any effects you know of that look amazing on them ? im just trialing some effects to see what looks best on them for now

Many vendors map spiral trees; those effects would be nice. Single line effects give the spinning/spiralling effect, with different colours etc you can get some pretty cool looking things happening.

Some effects for a spiral cylinder that I can think:
  • Single line: Spiral up/down/centre-out/centre-in, bounce up/down.
  • Pinwheel rendered top-down: gives an affect like vertical bars rotating around.
  • Bars with spiral wraps: Like a candy cane spiral stripe rotating around.
  • Guitar effect and use each strand for a guitar/bass guitar. Use MIDI tracks for best effect.
  • VU meter and grow/shrink from the bottom, use for beats.
  • Wave Effect, may need to create a 2D matrix shadow model.

thanks ill try some tomorrow night, got kids events tonight

Create a matrix the same height and width as your tree - so if you're spiraled 20 turns at 15 pixels a turn, make a 300 node matrix, 20 high and 15 high.
Set the start channel of the matrix to anchor to the start channel of the tree.
Then render the effect on the matrix. It'll map onto the tree, channel by channel.

lol AI was close making a pre done 3d design, but no matter how many times i point AI to the correct topper model, its keeps using the wrong one, but this is what the will kinda look like

so, after 3d printing the top and bottom supports and setting one up to test, i found that due to being 2.5M tall, they flopped too much in the middle, so i used a 3rd bracket to keep the centre still ,
but now im looking at them and the 4 Inch seed pixel topper is not very big and 32 x strands at only 4 inchs round (125mm) they are quite tight, the height of 2.5M is perfect, but complete 360 degree at only 4 inchs diameter they look like large tooth picks
so im going to try the 8 inch toppers, but i dont think that 64 strands will help my sanity, so i think ill try 32 stands on the 8 inch toppers , for now, or should i do 32 stands of only 180 degree, to only face the front, as most people wont see the back end of these columns / 360 poles

If it's not visible from the side/back, then i would stick with only what people can see. 180/270 etc. While 360 is very cool (and i'm all for over doing it), its a lot of extra pixels that will shine where no one can appreciate them.

I guess it all depends if the extra effects you can do with a 360 pole make it worth it. There would definitely be some fun stuff that looks much better on a full 360 vs 180.
