DMX Splitter

Every time I go to RPM's web site, Firefox locks up big time! That design is much like the others - non isolated.

What power options would people like to see for a non isolated DMX splitter?

I trust that RJ45 sockets (ESTA standard pinout) for input and outputs is the way to go?
 
RJ45 works for me, one thing that does confuse me is the DMX output from the dongles are they all the same or different pinouts at the RJ45?


I am using one from RJ.
 
I *think* the RJ board uses the standard ESTA pinout. You could check against the wiki here.

LOR and Renard use a different pinout, but who cares about them? :p
 
I believe both the RJ and RPM splitters use the "standard" of DMX on RJ45 pins 1 and 2, expecting standard AT&T T568B wiring (to get the twisted pair on Cat5), with DataA on Pin 1 and DataB on Pin 2.


I can't confirm that, though, because DIYC is now down for the fourth consecutive day :( ...

That's correct - RPM's DMX dongle uses the "standard" pinout with data on 1/2 (orange pair) and ground on 7/8 (brown pair).
 
I've been thinking about this project a little more.

How about using vertical RJ45 connectors and a PCB with mounting holes that suits the Jaycar HB6126 box?

There is a version of this box that has mounting flanges to make it easy to screw down.

We should be able to fit at least 4 isolated outputs and the isolated input, all on RJ45 connectors.

Power would be 9V - 36V DC with reverse polarity protection.
 
anything designed to fit into a readily available enclosure is a winner in my book
 
Keen on this idea as I said. I used two splitters this year with one in the garage out of the laptop with output to my wireless transmitter and then out to the yard with the other two. Getting away from the 230v transformer is a great option!


I am going out to the rear of the section next year so another couple would be handy.

OK, here's what a few hours at the computer produced today:

  • All DMX I/O on vertical RJ45 connectors (ESTA pinout)
  • Power LED
  • Powered from 9V - 36V DC (reverse polarity protection)
  • Can be optionally powered via P-DMX
  • Mounts neatly into Jaycar HB6126 plastic box
 
Looks good to an untrained eye like mine, are you thinking bare PCB or built up units.


I have got the iron warming up ready just in case.
