I am hoping to sync some lights next Christmas

Take a photo of your house, then watch other peoples lights videos, then work out a) what you like and b) what will work on your house and property.

Then plan, plan and plan

Welcome to the funny farm. Good start right there. I printed that out and read it over and over until I thought I had a handle on it and then kept it in my shed to refer back to until I understood. It seems a bit daunting at first, but then it seems to make sense.
Never be afraid to ask questions, because the only dumb question, is the one you don't ask.
 
Welcome to the Madhouse....we don't bite, well not all of us... do your research, plan plan plan like Oz said, jump into chat and zoom and the forums, lots of generous ppl to help, and get the group to give you the once over before you go spending any $. Have a look at xLights for a program, it's free and we have our own tame developer :D:D:p:p
