Sometimes the hardest thing for new people to understand is what is needed and how does it go together.

The image below is just one way you could set up a DMX universe.
Some quick explanations.
DMX Universe
A DMX Universe consists of 512 channels that are transmitted by a DMX Lighting Desk or for what we do a DMX Dongle.
A DMX Dongle needs to connect to a PC and be sent information from your chosen software.
Light Control Software
This could be Vixen, LightShow Pro or anything that supports the DMX Dongles.
DMX Dongle
There are a number of options, the one I use is the Lynx DMX Dongle, others include the the Enttec Pro and RPM's DMX Dongle.
SMPS
Switched Mode Power Supplies are a good way to get DC for use with DC light controllers or DC SSR's. Typically a 350w at the required voltage is the way to go.
External SSR's
These are used with controllers like the Lynx Freestyle or the Renard 64 to provide the actual switching of the lights.

Most of the DMX input Christmas light controllers use CAT5 cable and RJ45 plugs.

The cables required depends on the current draw of the lights, how many channels, etc.
