old xbox power supplies

Any reason old xbox (or new) power supplies couldn't be used for rgb strips?

Seeing it has a standby LED, there may be a little fiddling (joining wires or similar) to make the unit output the +12V rail.

I haven't looked, but there's probably some info on using these to be found online.
