Playing sound to wireless speakers

Not sure if this has been raised but has anyone figured out how to play show music to wireless speakers? I have a house full of Sonos gear and was thinking how I could use them instead of running speakers. They are portable and they sound great so it's a bonus. I have the play 1 as well as play 5. I'm happy to take it out and bring it in every night if it can be done. Or maybe the connect:amp may work.

Following with interest.
I run FPP on a Pi3 which has bluetooth built in and I've wondered if I could send the audio to a few wireless bluetooth speakers but never got around to trying it.
 
Maybe we are on to an un tapped market. A board that connects to the Pi. I'm quitting my job tomorrow [emoji3]. But seriously someone would have to know a way to make it work.

Unfortunately I am not familiar with how the sonos devices work. However bluetooth audio devices are very simple. For a standard Windows Computers when you connect a bluetooth audio device it adds a new sound device to your computer, you then select that as your audio device and sound comes out the bluetooth audio device instead of the standard speakers.


If the sonos ones are wifi then I would assume they work similar, you would select a different audio output device and use that, however with a quick read I don't believe they work this way as they seem to work independant from your phones audio so I guess you stream the audio to the device instead.


Bluetooth wireless audio would be easy to have working on a raspberry Pi but a wifi one I would need to have one and see how it works and get it working on a raspberry Pi, but I am sure it could work easy.
 
For a Sonos system you'd need to feed the PC audio into the line input on one of the speakers and select that as the source for the other Sonos speakers.

I think you can also buy an line in/out module for those systems. I'm fairly sure that the Sonos uses it's own wi-fi network and only connects to your home network via the network bridge.

Yes, definately correct - you can't stream to a Sonos over Bluetooth. So assuming you have a Play 5 (which qldking has), or a Connect or Connect:Amp, you can use the line-in on that. (which will be able to play to all other speakers, which can be one of the other models)

Sonos does run it's own mesh sort of network, but can also connect to a home wifi network (I believe earlier models needed the network bridge) Some models (connect and connect:amp) have ethernet as well.

I tried the line in on the play 5 today. It worked with the iPhone. Need to go into the Sonos app to tell it to switch to line in first. Was hoping to use the wifi side and use the two play 1s in the yard but the play 5 gives a nice sound. Just need to take it out and in each night. Hopefully someone may develop a way to access the wifi as time goes on. Thanks all for your help.

Yes this is possible, however very limited with functionality. This only works properly on the Raspberry bi 1 model B+, it does work on the Raspberry Pi 2 except only in Mono audio and the sound quality is a bit average.


I did get it working on the Pi 2 but for some reason it would just cut out after about 30 seconds and I would have to start the FM transmitter software again.


I am currently investigating 2 other ways to turn the pi into an FM Transmitter, one costs around $20 US and the other anywhere from $5 us. I have just gotten the $5 version working however the quality is pretty average, slightly better than the method you posted bit I am not sure why it's not working that great more testing required.
 
I can't get the link to work but one thing to keep in mind when looking for extremely cheap transmitter options is that there may not be any pre-emphasis. My understanding is that the bass is sent at a lower volume than everything else and the receiving radio compensates for this by playing it back louder than in the signal that it received (de-emphasis). If your transmitter lacks pre-emphasis then the receiving radio will play back the bass too loudly.

As a little side note, South Korea and North America have different pre-emphasis so proceed with caution if you order a transmitter from there.
 
the only way your going to use a sonos sytsem is to input into the play5 from the pi and play it as a source input on your play1's either as separate speakers or a stereo pair
