Hello all,

I am planning to rewire my mini trees with RGB lights this year but not down to pixel level, I will be having the whole tree change colour at the same time. I have been looking at the ones from Ray Wu but the sealing is an issue that has not been solved yet. Because it is a spiral wound mini tree at any time you will be looking at the back of 50% of the lights so that rules out of any of the flexible LED strips.

While looking around on ebay I saw these

They seem awefully cheap but maybe just the thing for mini trees. At that price I don't really think I can go wrong getting one set for a trial, cut the controller off and wack a DC SSR on and off I go.

Where is the flaw in my plans?

We look forward to you doing a review of them.
They definetly wouldnt be as bright as the strings from Ray Wu but these look more like the traditional LEDs strings. It will be interesting to know how they can be controlled and what voltage they are.

On closer look these look like mains supplied voltage which may be an issue as most lights are transformed down for Australia. I dont like the thought of having 240vac running outside in the weather with cheap made lights.

Those lights turned out to be a string of R and G and B leds not single RGB lights so I did not get them.

I have just asked Ray Wu for some more information on these

If I can't find anything else it might have to be these and try to improve the sealing on them

Jon,

Will be interested reading your opinion on the RGB strings if you decide to go with the 5mm ones from Ray Wu.

If you did buy pixel based, faceted bulbs, you could run them as a single RGB strand. I've seen that some of the controllers do allow you to "subdivide" a string by an even multiple, so if you used a string of 100 lights and set the divider to 100, then it would only need 3 DMX channels.

Then, next year, you could change the divider to suit your channel count. (50 or 25 or 10 or 5 or 4 or 2 or just 1)
