Sound Blaster 3 on BBB

Hey guys

I think this is a weird one, that or I'm completely missing something.

I have a SoundBlaster connected to my BBB via USB (obviously), then into an FM transmitter on my Player FPP instance which is labeled "Master".

This has worked pretty much without issue since I first set it up. I'll build part of my show, connect a prop, playing it all, no issues with the music transmission.

I noticed yesterday, my "Master" wasn't allowing me to select the SoundBlaster as my audio output device, only dummy.

Thought it was weird, rebooted, tried a few simple things like that, nothing would bring back the option.

Thinking something has gone wrong with my SoundBlaster I unplugged it and plugged it into another of my BBB's - "HouseRight" which is set as a remote.

Voila, SoundBlaster is an option. Figuring there must be an issue with the USB output of the original BBB, I switch them over in a bit of John Travolta/Nick Cage FaceOff action. Set them up with their new "faces" and IP's, restore the backups of each that I downloaded and fire them back up.

"Master" which was the BBB that WAS "HouseRight" (the one that was recognising the SoundBlaster), only gives me the option of Dummy audio output.

So I unplug the SoundBlaster again, plug it into John Travolta, sorry, "HouseRight", and it recognises it.

So what am I missing here? It's obviously not an issue with the USB on the particular BBB as the original unit that wasn't recognising it, now is, but doing so in the controller box that doesn't have my FM transmitter in it.

Did you perhaps upgrade to FPP 6? I saw someone else with this issue, and they solved it by adding a 10 second delay to startup. Dan Kulp was working with that person on Facebook, so I'm assuming he's aware of it now.

No, both are still on 5.5

I'd still give a startup delay a shot. It's possible something else is taking a while to start and preventing the sound drivers from loading.

Tried it just now. No change. Wouldn’t explain why its working on one but not the other

It has to be something in the way I’ve got it setup. I’ve just plugged it into another one of my BBB’s and it works there also.
All on 5.5.
Master was set as a player and the others were remotes, so changed that but didn’t work.
Might try format “Master” again and setup from scratch instead of restoring and see if that works

Issue is with my cape. Formatted BBB, flashed 5.5, initial local setup and plugged in Soundblaster and recognised. As soon as I put it onto my He123, it not longer recognises it. Move the BBB to another He123 and it recognises it again.
@AAH what would cause this? It's only one of my 3 controllers, everything else operating normal, just seems to knock out the USB

If it's working on a BBB not running off the HE123 but when plugging into the HE123 it's not working my only thought would be maybe that there is a power issue. Can you measure the 5V at the 5V input of the power connector that has 5V/0V/12V on it. Are you running off 5V or 12V?

4.99V

Have tried FPP4.6 now and no change, so not an OS issue

Not that I expect to see anything but can you post a pic of the soundcard hooked up and also a screenshot of the soundcard setup in fpp. Working and not working would be handy.

If you pull out the sd cards and swap them does the issue follow the sd card?
Alternately if you swap the sd card into the working bbb and plug that onto the he123 does the problem still occur?
I'm starting to think this is above my pay grade and @dkulp could maybe tell you how to scan the usb port to see if it says the dongle is there according to OS.

Current setup for ease of following what I’ve tried, as I have 3 BBB’s on 3 different controllers (all He123’s on 5.5).

BBB1 on He123 (1) with sound blaster not being recognised
BBB2 on He123 (2)
BBB3 on He123 (3)

BBB2 on He123 (2) with sound blaster recognised

BBB3 on He123 (3) with SB recognised

BBB2 on He123 (1) SB not recognised

BBB1 on He123 (2) with SB recognised

I’ve moved the BBB’s around so doesn’t follow the SD

Have you got a usb extension cable that you could try to get the soundcard at least a foot away from that spot?
