just looking for some help setting up sound card.

running HE123D controller on a beagle bone black and purchased on generic USB sound card from amazon.

when I plug it in the USB port, are these items normally plug and play or is there a driver / or similar i need to run first.

thanks in advance"

Head into FPP settings and update the output to the sound card you are using

You might need to use a powered hub on it. Sometimes the power draw causes issues.

The underlying Linux OS will need to support the card. There is no specific driver installation that you need to run.
If it doesn't appear in the drop down as mentioned by @Johnnyboy , first try the powered hub option that @Indigogyre recommends. If this still doesn't work, then it's likely that the device isn't supported and you would then be better off using something such as the Sound blaster play 3 which is highly recommended and used within the community
