The APC819 strobe controller accepts DMX input and drives RGB or white pixels.

Features

  • DC input (5V - 12V)
  • Selectable pixel types
  • PCB size is 72mm x 65mm
  • Supplied fully built and tested
  • Upgradeable firmware (via ICSP header)

DC Input

Feed DC power into the 2 pin green terminal block at the top. The polarity is marked on the PCB behind the connector.

The APC819 is shipped with the power jumpers (next to fuse) set to 12V. This will suit 12V pixels. The power jumpers can be rearranged for 5V pixels by setting them as per the legend next to the jumpers. Warning - setting the power jumpers to 5V operation and then applying more than 5.5V DC will damage your APC819!

Fuses

The pixel V+ line is protected by the on-board 3A mini blade fuse. The electronics has it's own resettable fuse (polyswitch).

DMX Input

There are two RJ45 connectors for DMX input / through. They are wired in parallel so it makes no difference which one is used as input. The RJ45 pinout is per the ESTA standard with the addition of pins 4+5 being connected together to allow use in P-DMX systems.

Termination

The termination ("TERM") jumper is next to one of the RJ45 sockets. Leave this jumper on if the board is the last (or only) one in the wiring chain (only one socket used). Remove it if the board is in the middle of the wiring chain (both sockets used).

Pixel Output

The 4 pin pixel output connector supplies 0V, clock, data and V+ to a string of pixels.

The pinout is the same as some other pixel drivers such as the ECG-PIXAD8.

LED

There are a small green LED on the PCB. It flashes slowly during normal operation.

Start Channel

When you receive your APC819, it will be set to DMX start channel 1 on DIP switches 1 to 9. You can change the DMX start address during operation.

See the DMX address setting page for more detail.

DMX Channels

Currently, the DMX channel assignments are (in order):
  • Red intensity (or general intensity with white pixels)
  • Green intensity (no effect with white pixels)
  • Blue intensity (no effect with white pixels)
  • Flash rate (higher values = more frequent flashes)
  • Flash duration (higher values = longer flashes)
  • Fill (higher values = more pixels on at a time)
  • Pixel count (how many pixels are connected)
