This is only relevant for xmas lighting because I need to access my pi and falcon boards, otherwise is a general network problem
I have been having problems of late where my internet access would just stop, or so my router thought, and I need some technical input.
The basics
I have broadband, fibre to node and then copper for about 500m to our house.
I have a Vodaphone modem / router with 2 lan outputs and wifi
also recently a Orbi mesh system so I can get wifi up the shed.
I have the Orbi mesh turned to access point mode and the router has the wifi turned off.
Problem is that this works fine for a few hours or even a day, but then it will just get confused and when you go to access a web page, the vodaphone router will throw up a "you are not connected to the internet" Trouble is, it may be wrong. I am streaming at the time and no glitch! I go to another page and it pops up, but then it just progressively gets worse. This is all while I am connected via a lan input.
On the wifi side, it basically does the same.
I have a 3d printer in the shed and have a camera setup to watch it, and it is still streaming within the network fine. That is only relevent as an indicator of the network still working, as this also happens when the 3d printers are off.
Solution?
I have used my basic network knowledge to try and find anything that looks out of place, but alas I don't know where to go.
I am thinking it is something to do with an ip conflict on the router. Has anyone got any clue as to where to start?
If I turn the vodaphone router off then back on, it comes good for a while and the router has been replaced and still does it.
Also, I tried the setup without the orbi mesh and with only 1 ethernet plugged in, all works fine. As soon as I plug a second ethernet cable in, it will start playing up again.
Which is why I am thinking some kind of conflict.

Do you only have one dhcp server, is it the Vodafone modem. Is the dhcp turn off on of the mesh if there is one.

Do you have any static IP address for the PI, etc, that need to be added to the reservations list in the dhcp list.

Generally if you have a static IP and the dhcp list does know about them, then it may issue that address again, causing a duplication.

You are better off disabling DHCP on your router and then allocating static IP's to all your devices, especially if you want to connect remotely.

Routers lease out an IP address (from a defined range) to a device that requests one. That lease is also given a pre-set duration time.
Prior to expiry of the lease, if the device is still connected, the lease is renewed automatically.
If the device is disconnected, the IP previously given will return to the pre-set range of IP's available to be allocated.
Which means a device may be given a different IP next time it connects.

The Orbi is set to access point mode, which means the router should be turned off. The pi has a static IP, however the problem occurs even if the pi is not on, so that isn't the problem.

I understand that and have looked into it to see if there is any conflict there as I can scan the wifi and even look at the ethernet but nothing there changes.
I am thinking it has more to do with the internet side of things which I am less familiar with. Not too sure about all this ipv4 ipv6 etc and the ip access to the internet

Just so you have some more information, do an 'ipconfig /all' on your computer and copy/paste this into a text document for future reference. When the issue occurs again, do another ipconfig /all and check to see if anything has changed.

For example mine is:

Ethernet adapter Ethernet:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : fritz.box
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GbE Family Controller
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : B4-2E-99-06-DA-E7
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::81db:6454:466:ad87%6(Preferred)
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.178.38(Preferred)
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Tuesday, 12 November 2019 11:26:33 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Friday, 22 November 2019 11:26:33 AM
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.178.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.178.1
DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 112471705
DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-24-D2-E9-E2-B4-2E-99-06-DA-E7
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.178.1
NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

It will clearly show what IP is handing our your DHCP lease, what your DNS servers are etc. Very helpful for weeding out these issues.

As another test, if it is happening frequently, open a command line and just do a 'ping -t 8.8.8.8' (constant ping to google dns), when you notice a dropout check this window and see if the pings are also timing out. If you find you lose access but the pings are not timing out it sounds like it might be a DNS issue.
