2811 Pixels really cheap but need support from pixel controllers.

Would you use 2811 intelligent pixels if there was support

Ray has been pushing the 2811 IC pixel strings, modules and strip of late and the price of these offers excellent value to the community, the only issue is that there doesnt seem to be any current support for these with any of the common pixel controllers like the ECG series and the E68x

The 2811 is a 3 wire variation of the WS2801 with 8 bit dimming, but what the advantage is that the cost is far cheaper than the other pixel strings, modules and strip.

Here is a comparison of cost between the 2801 and the 2811, there is a lot of money to be saved which means more lights :D , so lets hope the 2811 support is on the agenda to be implemented soon. I do believe that both Ed and Jim are planning on adding support to the ECG series and the E68x series of pixel controllers, so hopefully we will see support real soon so we can take advantage of the much improved price for our intelligent lighting.

STRIP

5m strip 12 VDC 2801 12 sections per metre 36LEDs/m solid silicone = $66.32

5m strip 12 VDC 2811 10 sections per metre 30LEDs/m silicone tube = $36.00
(yes thats correct, cheapest by far and is a new product from Ray)

MODULES

20 x 12VDC 2801 rectangular modules = $17.50

20 x 12VDC 2811 rectangular modules = $14:00

STRINGS

50 x IP68 Resin Filled 2801 5VDC pixel string = $25.00

50 x IP68 Resin Filled 2811 5VDC pixel string = $18.00

I just translated part of the data sheet and it appears that it is a constant current type. The current seems to be fixed at 18.5mA per output.

They also quote a distance of up to 20 metres between nodes!

So the 2801 is rated at apporox 20mA so not much difference at all and you definetly wouldnt tell the difference between a 20ma and a 18.5ma driven LED

And 20 metres between nodes is a great advantage as well over the 2801

On the e680/e681 side, Jim has mentioned that he does have 2811 working already, and is planning on having a firmware update available soon.

I've ordered some modules from Ray to test them out in anticipation.

Have just ordered a few of the strips from Ray in anticipation of Ed adding the ws2811 protocol to the ECG series.

I would like to say that I wouldnt buy any of the 2811 stuff until there is formal support for these ICs.

I believe also that offering the 2811 support will definetly be an advantage as the majority of us are stuck to strict budgets and the price of the 2811 allows for many more lights for many of us and this alone will make the difference in value when choosing a controller.

2811 support will make mega pixel trees cheaper than most of the RGB elements with dumb pixels. If the e681 gains that controll Im going to need to call my local power company as they will have to juice up my house!
