Hacking icicles

Bought from China, no transformer.

Will be putting fuses on each line. Still trying to find my power meter to hook lights into to find the amps.

Would you seriously throw them away? I know if I told my hubby we were binning them my lighting hobby would be over.

This may sound harsh, but just because you spent money of something doesn't justify bypassing any safety issues.

Depending on the method, adding fuses may make the strings even more likely to break or have a live part protrude. :eek:
 
Ive used them for the past 2 years outside, and will be using them again this year.

I respect everyone here and acknowledge everyones concerns and will keep fire extinguisher handy as I said last year when this very same topic came up.

Actually I think it was mainly alec last year, told me I was going to kill myself, my husband & children and any other children that came to see my display :)

I'm pretty sure that every time you turn those icicles on, another cute fluffy little goat dies somewhere. :p

Note: Just remembered, it was alec that told me last year that I was going to die with regards to using a 15A fuse in LOR 240v (15A is what comes with it).

It was yourself that told me the year before I was going to harm small children who came near my icicles......which are on the roof. :-X

The correct fuse for a LOR AC controller is in fact 10A when used with a 10A Australian cord set and conventional power outlets. The 15A value is for 110V versions where the supplied cables are much thicker and the outlet is rated for 15A. Not a show stopper, but better to have the 10A one fitted so the TRIACs have a better chance of surviving when an output is shorted.

Well, to be fair we told you about the inherent dangers of poorly insulated 240V lights in general. I think that was before you mentioned where they were located. Better hope none of those little tots can climb. :p
 
lol thanks David. If they climb up brick houses I think myself (and his/her parent) needs to be more concerned about that than getting to lights cause that would just be creepy :)
 
I take your advice seriously David regardless of my joking about.

I will be doing what I can to be safe. After chatting in chatroom I going out tomorrow and buying a 1amp fuse and holder for each line of icicles. Each line of icicles comes to 0.11A 23W. I will be using 4 of them on the house. EAch with fuse and holder.

I also have the RCD and a fire extinguisher. We only went away for one night during the 6wks of lights being on last year so we are here 99% of the day and night.

I thankyou all for looking out for my safety and welfare.
 
I can understand your reluctance not to scrap these, but you have been warned of teh hazards and you are doing things to improve the safety of these.

So David i think your input has been valuable because at least now she is at least trying to minimize the hazard due to the warnings she has been given.

In the end the safest method would be to scap them but if thats not a real otion then by adding low current fuses and running through an RCD will definetly help with improving safety
