With data projectors fairly common these days, I was wondering if anyone had thought of integrating them into their displays?

It could be an easy way to add some moving effects, and filling windows with light / video

i'm thinking something like this has good potential

cool. Im not necessarily thinking of just the linked virtual Santa, that's just an easy example of what I'm thinking.

It could be expanded with falling snow, different scenes, Virtual Christmas lights.

I kind of like the idea of projection mapping onto the building itself, or onto blank, static cutouts of trees etc...

i'm kinda thinking out loud i guess. It would get pricey quickly buying new projectors, but if you have one for home theater etc... it could easily be re-purposed for christmas.

You could also get them relatively cheap second hand at auctions etc...

I'm nearly finished my video that mainly has our family in elf yourself videos. This is rear projected to a sheet on my verandah. All lights and pixel tree will be sequenced to it and video will be sent to the projector via vga to cat5 converter. It has a countdown till next show incorporated. Ill post a youtube vid on the weekend when i get a chance

I have experimented with an old data projector that I modded to use non-standard globe, with the idea of projecting on to the light-cream-coloured garage door

The mod was along these lines: Fooling LCD Projector hack! Install any lightbulb! DIY
But you really do need a super bright replacement globe - a 50W halogen downlight barely projected at all. I don't think I'll bother now anyway so haven't gone hunting for something suitable. :)

Officeworks also sell a $350 projector. Pretty basic spec but would be perfect for xmas lights and in the scheme of a massive display isn't that expensive!

the elf yourself videos sound like a good way to get some personalisation into the display. I like your idea of the countdown as well.

Thats an interesting idea, I've never really thought of that before. I guess if it would work fairly well for this kind of thing, where there isn't a need for mega bright, accurate colours. it could be a really cheap way to get some projection happening if you could source one or more "dead" projectors from work, or the tip or wherever.

What kind of got me thinking about all this is that I work in the Audio Visual field, and at work we have a few older projectors which still mostly work, but have been replaced due to age. It would probably be possible to borrow one or two to put in the windows, and could jazz up our yard a bit more. I'd even be tempted to put one or two in the yard (in suitably weatherproof, and theft proof boxes) for an attempt at projection mapping the house, or blank white christmas trees etc... but I'd probably want to use projectors that aren't so critical in requiring to be returned.

I went the easy route
From Best Buy:
Rear projector $150
DVD player $20
From on line:
Rear projection screen material $60

Hung the screen inside at the front window, pluged the stuff up, put in the Virtual Santa DVD
Watch the kiddies have a great time
Was the biggest hit (most talked about element) last year
