@ nutz yes it is , a lot of C & P .... but 7200 channels are icicles which this year are merely being tested and really only beng used in RGB mde and another 7200 in a tree. pleus 20 mini trees that are basically C & P

If the Pi is connected to a Switch on a netowrk and left on all day, there is no need for an additional clock, correct? As I don't have a network lead in my garage (yet) I'm keeping my laptop out there connected to WIFI and it connects to a switch, which has my Pi & D2 connected to it and the Pi seems to be holding up the time and starting the sequence at 8pm as it's setup to.

PS, as per my original request (3 pages ago now!) I have managed to sort out my D2 & Pi IP issues. For the record I'm running multicast with no issues (under 50 channels this year)
 
The Pi needs access to the Internet to get the time and when first boots its time is 1970-01-01, then it talks to the internet and gets the current date/time.

If it can not talk to the internet the year will stay at 1970.

You can set the time and leave the Pi on, not sure how much time drift it does over X days. If it goes off you back at 00:00 1970-01-01 and need to set the time/data again.

The RasClock means you set the time once, do not need to set the time by hand again when it boots, and you do not need the internet. RasClock is not that expense may as well just buy it, and then you can run your show on a show network rather than the home network.
 
I run mine with no Internet connection and no RasClock and it keeps good time.
But I do need to reset it after power interruptions.
 
Another item, RasClock's battery lasts about 2 years stored in the garage, before you need to replace it.
Maybe write on the battery the install Month/Year.
