Similar to many others here, I'm trying to have all of my display elements hooked up with waterproof connectors, so that installation time is as quick and foolproof as possible.

While working out enclosures for my e680 and PixAD8's, I was wondering on the best way to connect an ethernet cable into an enclosure, and not require cat5 termination at time of installation.

Has anyone played with any of the RJ45 waterproof connectors available?

I ordered a handful of some LTW ones that I thought would be perfect from an ebay seller but when they arrived, I realised that these were only the male part. I have found a local supplier of the female part (here and here), so have ordered a couple of these to see how they'll go.

While I was waiting, I also asked Ray if he could source something like this over there.. He's come back today with the following..

http://www.aliexpress.com/fm-store/701799/210682707-482090127/waterproof-RJ45-connector-male-and-female-without-cable-attached.html

Even though he's said male & female, from the picture, I can't really be sure about it..

Has anyone used these sorts of connectors before?

Hard to tell from that picture, but it could be a similar part to the Ethercon.

With those, you use normal (pre-terminated) cables. The RJ45 clips into into a water resistant housing and normally the socket is chassis mounted. The back of the chassis socket accepts an RJ45, so it's really a female-female adapter.

What's hard to see is if Ray's item includes the both the plug shell and the chassis part.

Yeah, I've asked Ray for clarification if both sides are included - perhaps he only included the photo of the female. (I did originally ask to have both included)

If he could do in smaller orders, I'd get 2-3 to just check them out, but given I've got the other ones on their way, might way for more info

Here's the links to the Nuetrik EtherCON series:

As you'll see, they are a cable - chassis connection soltion. Nice, but quite expensive.
Chassis-Cable works well I think - install the female part on the enclosure, and connect internally to pixel controller of choice. Then, the cable is standalone (and can be stored easily)

There are IP67 Rated RJ45 Cable Glands available; heres an example

The gland is bigg enough to pass an entire RJ45 through, then you can just tighten it up. These work well. Suggest you shop around that price on that web page is pretty spend, and would be a full retail price, expect to pay between $2-$3 if you buy them at 100off price.

thats right it is a female to female connector, the outside gland seal is made in a way so a complete cable can be plugged in and then screwed up to seal then when not needed unscrew and unplug

Sounds good - I now just wish I hadn't ordered the other ones!. Oh well!

Thanks for that

Another one that should suit and is in Oz:

EDIT: I've emailed them asking P&A for 10 / 100 pieces.

I got 10 of these to see what they were like. Well, they are basically a large cable gland that comes with a piece of sticky backed material that you wrap around the cable to bulk it up to the ID on the gland. Not entirely what I was expecting. Not sure if the Ray Wu ones are the same?

I ordered a couple female chassis-mount bits (not cheap!) to match the male bits I already had, and they arrived the other day. Haven't installed them yet, but they look really good... I went the easy option which has a 200mm fly lead for the internal connection.

Will be interesting to see what Ray's ones are like.

I bought a couple of each of the chassis sockets, plugs and sealing caps:

http://www.photonage.com.au/ip67-waterproof-rj45-screwon-female-chassis-p-3430.html
http://www.photonage.com.au/ip67-waterproof-rj45-screwon-male-line-p-8355.html
http://www.photonage.com.au/ip67-waterproof-rj45-screwon-sealing-cap-p-6814.html

I got mine from Altronics, but they are the same items.

The male part comes with an RJ45 plug, as you're expected to feed the CAT5 cable through the male housing before putting the plug on. ie. You can't use these fittings with a fully pre-made lead. You could cut one end of a pre-made lead off, feed it through and use the supplied RJ45 to replace that end.
