Chat logs? Why are the chat logs being kept?

What sort of disk space are we talking about?

500Gb bandwidth is nothing - the storage space is the problem.

Chat logs are necessary for displaying X previous messages upon sign in. They're also used for moderating purposes if required. Chat logs are pruned on a regular basis, however, so the logs aren't all that space consuming. At the moment the SQL table for chat logs is under 15 megabytes.

Ok fair enough - from what Harrison said it sounded like the chat logs were never deleted or something.

So what sort of disk space are we talking about for the entire site - what kind of storage are we talking for the entire site?

I'm surprised at some of the underlying tones in some of the posts. It was only a few days ago that I was talking with somone about how some of the US sites are very vitriolic. Please dont let this degenirate.

AS for me, yes i would be prepared to donate and up until now I never really thought about the cost of running ACL or who owned it or was in charge. Yes we had a system crash without adeqate backups, but I dont see that this should be a reason to start blaming people who volunteer their time and $ to help people like me. I also dont see a reason why we need to move the hosting. We seem to have made a big jump to get to the point where we are talking about setting up new sites, new hosting, buying Ausie Phil out (dont really understand where he fits into all this).

As Harrison has said, lets give them some time to work out what went wrong, and what needs to be done to bring the site up to speed in terms of reliability, backup and whatever else. Then we can decide what it will cost, how to fund it and if we are happy with the arrangements.

As to how we will decide, I suggest a game of paper, scissors rock. ;)

I haven't seen so much HoHoHoing from a small group of people, as a former IT specialist and senior systems administrator I can tell you there are many 24 hour days of people working behind the scenes to keep things running. Had a hickup , big deal, did you get to eat your xmas dinner and have a few hours off, bet the guys didn't . I enjoy what I use the sight for , if you don't like it then leave. End of rant for now. Ps there were many many lunches I missed because other staff thought they were more important but still left at 5 while the system guys could still be working past midnight but expected back by 7 am.

The massive size of ACL is the chat logs. The rest is just SQL tables. Another thing to think about is the bandwidth to access the site. Lat month this was in excess of 500GB.

500GB Chat Logs? damn thats a lot for text.. zip those things daily and clear out anything thats a month old.. I used to run IRC server on EFNet and never had logs that big.
